What is source code?

• "The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it"
  
• Source code doesn't include stuff that comes with the OS
  
• Source code includes build files
  
• If code is generated by a machine from some other data:
  
  • by a generator included with the program
    • It's probably not source
  • but can be hand-edited
    • it's probably source code
  • but can't be hand-edited
    • it's probably not source code
