17 USC 106 gives copyright holders certain exclusive rights:
  1. Making copies
  2. Making derivative works
    • Works "based on" other works
    • Most Free Software licenses call this "modifying"
  3. Distributing copies
    • by sale or other transfer of ownership
    • or by rental, lease, or lending
  4. Public display and performance
    • whatever that means for software
